Acne is one of the most common skin diseases. It occurs mainly in adolescence but it may appear at any age. It’s an inflammation of the pilosebaceous units of the face and body. Acne occurs mostly during adolescence and is more severe to the boys.
Which are the acne types?
Acne manifests with comedones (comedogenic acne) papulopustules (papulopustular acne), or nodules and cysts (nodular and cystic acne).
Acne rarely manifests at an adult woman, as well as fulminant acne with acute onset of severe cystic acne.
What is the acne’s pathogenesis?
Acne is a disorder of keratinization of hair follicles in which the keratinous material is denser, blocking the secretion of sebum.
This disorder in combination with the effect of hormones (androgens), and bacteria (propionibacterium acnes) in people with a suitable genetic background, leads to overproduction of sebum, aseptic inflammation and as a consequence the clogging of hair follicles with sebum.
Is acne affected by external factors?
Acne can be aggravated by stress and by endocrinological disorders or during menstruation.
Drugs such as cortisone also cause exacerbation. However, acne is not caused by the consumption of chocolate or fatty foods as is often believed by the patient.
Which are the treatments of acne?
Depending on the clinical picture and of course the age, acne is treated with topical or systemic therapy.
Topical acne treatments include topical retinoids, the gel of benzoyl peroxide, topical antibiotics.
Systemic treatments include antibiotics, contraceptives or isotretinoin.
Combined Therapies?
Along with the medication, your doctor will recommend a special skin soap and possibly a cosmetic cream.
In many cases, dermabrasion with microcrystals is necessary to remove sebum.
The doctor will inform you if and when is it right to be done.
The application of mask peel provides excellent response in patients with comedogenic acne.
It is a chemical peeling of glycolic acid which has the ability to remove the sebum and dead skin cells with excellent results especially in patients who do not want to take medication.
What is the treatment, in case of acne scars?
The Erbium Yag Laser is the most effective treatment of acne scars, both for recent and old ones.
However, there are other treatments like Dermapen or Aha peelings.
Your dermatologist will inform as to what treatment or combination of treatments is perfect for your case.
